Powerful Partnership Scholarships

There are many high school students in Clark County who are helping others and making a difference in our community, and NV Energy recently awarded 23 such students each a $1,000 Powerful Partnership Scholarship. In addition to receiving the scholarship, this year's students were recognized at a reception at NV Energy's offices.

Since its inception in 2000, the NV Energy Powerful Partnership Scholarship program has given 149 scholarships to area high school students who have made significant contributions to our community, excelled academically, and demonstrated outstanding involvement in school activities. The scholarships can be used at a college, university, or trade school of the student's choice.

Community Relations Manager Doretha Easler said, "We began this program as a way to encourage and celebrate the community involvement of our outstanding high school students and we are very pleased with the number of students who have demonstrated leadership in academics and community service."

Pat Shalmy, (then) president, NV Energy, quoting Aristotle said, "The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet. School was never meant to be easy. It's hard work."

Shalmy said that the roots that each student has planted here in Las Vegas will ont only benefit them in college, but also play a crucial role in who they become and what kind of life they lead.

He also reminded them that what makes America so great is its diversity, and in college they will be surrounded by classmates of all different cultures. He encouraged each one of them to embrace and value the differences of others as they build new relationships.
